The cool kid gangs of 60’s San Francisco and the mean streets they inhabit. Ask Me, Don’t Tell Me is a documentary made in 1961 about the “Youth For Service” program which asked tough street teens to build community housing projects for the elderly and disabled.
“You know you can ask a person to do something, and you’ll see a difference in the work. Because you know if you ask me to do something, i’ll do a better job. I’ll do anything if you ask me. But if you say ‘do this’, ‘do that’, ‘well if you don’t do it…’, ‘well you better do it’, well i just won’t do it. And I wanna see what somebody’s gonna do if I don’t do it.”
